Living Costs in Sydney

Money-newYou’ve heard how expensive Australia is to live in, right?  Well, the good news for Jaguars on a budget is that the Australian dollar has been falling on the world market.  So living there is now more affordable for foreigners, especially compared with North America and the UK. Here are details:

Food
Sydney offers a variety of cuisines. You can get American-style fast food like McDonald’s, Hungry Jacks (Burger King) and Subway. Or go ethnic — Indian, Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Japanese, Lebanese or Italian. A McChicken meal (including small fries and a regular soft drink) from McDonald’s runs about A$7.50  Dominos and Pizza Hut have $5 pizza specials. Normal pizzas vary from $8 to $20. Takeaway meals from Chinese, Thai and Indian places usually cost between $8 and $15.

Global Cafe (Campus Cafeteria)global cafe

The cafeteria at S P Jain’s Sydney campus has a good range of vegetarian and non-veg meals for $6 – 8. It runs from 8am to 4pm on weekdays, and serves different kinds of cuisines each day. Also, there’s a big refrigerator outside the cafeteria where students can keep their packed lunches, plus microwaves and kettles for student use.

Groceries for your Apartment
The S P Jain student apartments are really close to supermarkets, where you can get everything you need — handy, because your apartment comes with a kitchen and pots and pans. A pack of 5 Maggi 2-minute noodles costs about A$4.25.  A kilo of white rice is $2. Bring Mom’s recipes, and you’ll be a happy camper.

Getting to campus from the student apartments takes 30 to 40 minutes each way by bus, and costs about $2.50. There are many types of discounts, especially if you travel during off-peak hours, or buy a 90-day pass.  Taxis are more expensive, and can range between $40 to $90 per trip, depending on traffic and your destination.  Getting from the airport to campus, for example, can cost as much as $100.

The Australian Government led an initiative to lower international students’ cost of living. Check this out: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-04-02/improving-cost-of-living-a-must-to-boosting/6367472
